Filled for the Work God Calls Us To Do

Exodus 35:31 says that God filled Bezalel with the Spirit of God, giving him wisdom, understanding, knowledge, and all kinds of skills. Bezalel and Oholiab were former slaves, newly freed and wandering in the wilderness, yet God chose them to build the tabernacle—His dwelling place among His people. Scripture does not say they were simply talented or experienced; it emphasizes that they were filled with the Spirit of God. Their ability to work with such precision and beauty was not merely learned skill, but divine empowerment for a holy purpose.

In the Old Testament, the Spirit of God often came upon people to equip them for specific tasks. Here, it is craftsmen—ordinary workers—who are filled with the Spirit to do sacred work. This shows that God values obedience and availability over credentials. The tabernacle was not built by human strength alone, but by the Spirit of God working through willing people.

This passage points forward to the New Testament truth that those who belong to Christ have His Spirit dwelling in them. God’s work has always depended on God’s Spirit. When He calls someone, He does not leave them to rely on their own strength; He provides what is needed to accomplish His purposes.

This reminds me that God does not wait for me to be fully qualified before He calls me. He calls me and then fills me. When God asks me to do something for His glory, I do not need to depend on my own confidence or ability. I need to depend on His Spirit. Like Bezalel and Oholiab, I can trust that God will give wisdom when I lack it, understanding when I am unsure, and skill when the task feels beyond me. My role is not to prove myself capable, but to be willing and obedient.

Prayer

Lord,
Thank You for being a God who equips those You call. I confess that I often hesitate when I feel unqualified or afraid that I am not enough. Help me to trust that Your Spirit is sufficient where I am weak. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit—with wisdom, understanding, and knowledge—so that I may do the work You have prepared for me. May everything I do be for Your glory and not my own. Teach me to depend on You fully and to step forward in faith when You call.
Amen.
