When Power Is Revealed
Scripture
Exodus 5:6–9 (NIV)
That same day Pharaoh gave this order to the slave drivers and overseers in charge of the people: “Make the people work harder and do not let them pay attention to lies.”
Observation
At first glance, it might seem that the struggle in Exodus is between Moses and Pharaoh. But Scripture makes it clear that the conflict is much deeper. This is not a disagreement between two leaders — it is a confrontation between human power and divine authority.
God makes a legitimate request: that Israel be allowed to go and worship. Pharaoh’s response is not compromise or dialogue, but escalation. He increases the workload, removes resources, and accuses the people of laziness. The Israelites suffer more after God’s command is spoken.
This suffering is not because God wants to punish Israel. It is because Pharaoh’s control is being challenged.
When unjust power is confronted, it often tightens its grip before it is exposed. Pharaoh’s actions reveal what was already true: he does not merely rule Israel — he believes he owns them. God does not create Pharaoh’s cruelty; He allows it to be revealed.
God even tells Moses ahead of time that Pharaoh will resist. But knowing Pharaoh’s heart and revealing Pharaoh’s heart are not the same thing. The unfolding conflict makes the truth visible to everyone — Israel, Egypt, and Pharaoh himself.
Application
There are seasons when obedience seems to make things worse instead of better. Speaking truth, setting boundaries, or resisting injustice can result in increased pressure, misunderstanding, or loss. In those moments, it is tempting to wonder whether we acted too soon — or whether God is truly at work.
Exodus reminds us that exposure often comes before deliverance.
God does not rush revelation. He allows power to reveal itself fully so that what is hidden can no longer be denied. This does not minimize suffering or make it “worth it” in a simple sense. Scripture never treats suffering lightly. But it does insist that suffering under unjust power is seen — and that God is not absent while truth unfolds.
Waiting for change can be slow and uncomfortable. But revelation has a way of shifting what once seemed personal or isolated into something that is clearly systemic and undeniable. What is revealed cannot remain hidden forever.
Prayer
God,
When obedience leads to difficulty and truth feels costly, help me trust that You see what is unfolding. Give me patience when justice feels delayed and wisdom when the path forward is unclear. Guard my heart from bitterness, and help me believe that You are still at work — even when change comes slowly.
Amen.
Good one, especially in light of what you’ve been going through lately.
