A Life Fully Built

As a child, I often walked with my mother on her morning walks down the dirt road near our home. One day she pointed out a house that consisted of only a foundation and a frame. It looked different from any home I had seen before. My mother explained that a couple from Sweden had come to our town with dreams of building a beautiful home on the property they had purchased. When their finances did not work out as planned, they were forced to abandon the project and return home.

Years later, after being away for a long time, I drove down that same road again. There the house still stood—unfinished, still only a shell. It was a quiet reminder of a dream begun but never completed.

Jesus speaks to this same reality in Luke 14:29: “For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you.” In this passage, Jesus is teaching about the cost of discipleship. He reminds us that it is not enough to begin well; we must be willing to give everything required to finish. A foundation without a completed structure tells a story of incomplete commitment.

As Christians, we have accepted Christ as the foundation of our lives. We learned early on that the wise man builds his house upon the rock. Yet Jesus warns us that even when the foundation is right, we can still choose not to surrender fully. We often hold things back—our money, our time, our relationships, and even what we allow to shape our hearts and minds. Instead of giving our whole lives to Christ, we attempt to build around Him on our own terms. Like that unfinished house, our lives remain incomplete, quietly witnessing to divided devotion.

Jesus calls us to something greater. In John 12:25, He tells us that those who “lose their life” for His sake will find it. And in Matthew 6:33, He commands us to “seek first the kingdom of God,” promising that when we do, all these other things will be added to us. Surrender is not loss—it is the pathway to fullness.

Choose today to “lose your life” and “seek first the kingdom of God.” Count the cost and give Him everything. Allow God to finish what He has begun in you. Be a beautiful and complete tower for all to see, so that God may be glorified.
